Before A-Man, comic book writers used this device just "for fun/laughs". See She-Hulk (did Animal Man predated her, by the way? Who came first in terms of Breaking the Fourth Wall/Meeting with writer?)
Since it has been established that Earth-Prime was a fictional DCU Earth and "not" our (real) Earth, I bet "the" Grant Morrison Animal Man met was supposed to be OUR real Grant Morrison, and not a fictional one. So it would be the very first time a character would meet his REAL creator. Ain't it?
I mean, was the breaking of the 4th Wall in Morrison's 'Animal Man' really original? Was the meeting with Morrison himself a shocking, ground-breaking event in comic book history?

I'm not sure it is, as Ambush Bug has had away of speaking to the reading audience and refering to himself as comic character. Flash 2 at least on 60's cover said to by his comic or he would cease to exist. Probably not quite what you mean but in a similar area

I think 'ANIMAL MAN' was the very first series to do it seriously, exploring uncharted waters.
