1 piece of animal man info that i always found interesting (and couldn't find it mentioned here anywhere), is that the animal man series was initially only a 4 issue limited series. apparently, sales were so good for the 1st few issues, dc got morrison to make it an on going. morrison had already had the story for issue #5 written for another project. he then made some adjustments to it and used it as a fill in issue to give him more time to put together future storylines.
like i said, i couldn't find mention of this anywhere on the board, so i thought i would share it w/ you.

1573,
The Coyote's Gospel is impressive. Poetry, comic book poetry. Weird enough, Animal Man's greatest treasures (his outstanding and meaningful breaking of the Fourth Wall; the dissertation about the various grades of existence and their higher meaning and/or purpose) started there --- The Coyote's Gospel was the beginning of a revolution.

i agree. it's just somewhat ammusing that what could very well be the best animal man story, wasn't even supposed to be an animal man story.
