I live in Naples, a big city set in South-Italy. You know, the city troubled with mountains of garbage. MMmmmmm it's 1:46 here. In the middle of night. Just come back from a TERRIFIC second viewing of 'IRON MAN'. Superb masterpiece.

Yeah i'm french. As for why India, well, that's a long story: i've had a long love story with Asia in general & India in particular (land of the vegetarians, by the way ;-) & i've travelled there a few times & i think the way things and human relationships work there fits me better than our crazy western society... There are dozens of reasons, it's hard to sum it up in a few words...

Since minominop asked in a PM, i'll copy my answer here ;-)
India... Very difficult to sum-up all this in a few sentences & i effectively won't do a whole essay but i'll try to explain. India is, can be, everything and it's contrary. How i "met" it, how i percived it is partly a personnal point of view that some might not share at all, but here's a few things of India as i perceive it.
1st of all, the fact that it's a different culture means more than differences in the way people live, it's a whole metaphysical diffence of points of views when it comes to some things. Indians can have a different perception of time, of the way life works than we westerners do. The notions of being late or making too much noise at night are very new there for practical exemples. Begging is not something that one should be ashamed of, too. More deeply, i think there's, well... Indians don't want to MASTER their environnment or fate as we westerners do. They want a better life, sure, but they accept reality much more than we do. They also have this kind of respect of life: though many Indians eat meat or fish, being a vegetarian is a natural thing there, as is belief in God or life after death. No one will ever mock u about such things. I think Indians don't have much of that typical western cynism that we have. People are mostly in a very feminine energy. Many westerners shared that view with me that Indians can be like children sometimes (in the good sense): they are very emotional, sometimes naive, they can sometimes befriend u for life in a few days and cry because u leave for another destination... Also, it's a country where the main rule seems to be : "u do ur thing and let me do mine" (and that's probably why, despite local tensions or violences here & there, soooo many religions have been able to coexist in peace in a democracy for 60 years.)
Now don't think that India is heaven: there is a hidden violence that can be terrible, a kind of individualism hidden behind the sense of community, it's a very sexist country in which many women suffer a lot, many children work because their family are too poor, u will also meet many cheaters that will try to rip u off and see people living in a terrible poverty and misery... It's also changing very fast, with a fastly growing, western-influenced, educated middle class. India is many things, and one's experience there can only be one's own. but i found there a balance between things that somehow fits me better. Possibly the main thing is that people don't always act like they're in one big competition (having more money, more women, knowing more things, having travelled more, knowing the best clubs, whatever...) like i often think people do here. U r what u r, they r what they r. U connect or u don't and it u won't befriend everybody but u can b what u r. I think i can become a much better, humbler person there than i'll ever be here.
& of course i'm deeply in love with this culture, it's philosophy, music, way of life and a hundred little funny everyday life details & i could go for hours about all this... & Indian women, though being totally out of reach unless u marry one, are the most beautiful women in the world ;-)
I hope that helped ;-)

to each, his own. or her own. if the indian culture/way of life is what you like and want for yourself, then so be it. go for it. make your dreams and wishes happen.
in a way, your reasons shouldn't matter to anyone. if it's what you want then it's for you.
i believe this would fall under "the pursuit of happiness".
