i'm guessing, once he uses an animal's ability, it's "stored" in some sort of memory file in his head. then he has instant knowledge of the animals and their abilities. until he absorbs new animal's it's probablly a big guessing game and hoping he gets a usable ability.

Wow, that's a likely scenario. Remember when in Animal Man #2 he absorbed the mantis's abilities and was guessing: "what have I gained from that?" until he figured it out... classic scene.

I'd say thats dead on from what I've seen. Can you tell me about the Mantis Agent? I know they are a symbol in many Asian martial arts, does it relate to that?

ok mav, when he absorbed the mantis abilities, he used it's proportionate strength and speed and then it's ability to cling to surfaces.
after re-reading that scene, i don't think it was a matter of not knowing what ability he gained. but more of a "what ability do i use" thing. i say this because after absorbing the mantis, buddy asks himself "what did i absorb from the mantis?....." then he continues and starts listing the abilities in his head "speed...strength..." and stops when he decides "strength will do."
sorry, i don't have scanning capabilities or else i would scan the pages for you.

1573,
You're pretty much right, he can feel the abilities, but ONLY after he absorbed them... that's my point! Before Buddy would absorb the abilities, he can only guess what he gained from the animal.

That is why absorbing an animal he doesn't know, from the other side of the universe might not prove useful. He's going to have to randomly absorb animals to test if they are useful, before he gets into trouble.
How long after he absorbs the power does he get to use it? Does he keep it indefinately until he discards it himself?

in morrison's run, i believe it was determined he kept the abilities for about 30 minutes. then he would have to re-absorb the ability.
also, i'm pretty sure as soon as he absorbs the ability he has an "understanding" of what he absorbed and what he can do w/ it.
there hasn't been any sign of a delay between absobing and using the abilities that i have seen. so, i'm guessing useage of the ability is immediate following absorbtion.

Maybe he absorbs more than just the animals ability, like its instinct as well.

"Instinct" to USE the ability in the proper way, definitely yes. Not "instinct" as a form of social behaviour/pulse...
In Out of Africa Buddy mentioned that the longer he is "exposed" to the animal(s), the longer he retains the abilities.

A lot has changed, with regards to his powers since then though.

Another instalment released today. Not a whole lot of Buddy in it unfortunatly...it seems to be a Hawkman/Strange + Comet story more than anything.
Review to come.

I'm wondering HOW Infinite Crisis fixed the whole Post-Crisis mess in Hawkman's continuity... terrible... atrocious...
